Self-Guided Learning in Vallejo

What Is a Self-Guided Learning Course?

Self-Guided Learning™ is a course-based learning approach from the American Heart Association® that combines two independent components:

  1. Online cognitive learning — completed at your own pace on any compatible device, anytime, anywhere
  2. A self-guided skills session — completed independently at a CPR Verification Station™ learning center, where real-time, objective performance feedback guides you through each required skill

This approach differs from traditional instructor-led classroom learning and standard blended learning. There is no instructor present during the skills session. Instead, the CPR Verification Station learning center objectively measures your performance against AHA-defined criteria. You can practice and repeat the required skills activity as often as needed to achieve a passing score.

Upon successful completion of both components, you receive an American Heart Association Course Completion eCard for BLS, ACLS, or PALS — valid for two years and accepted by hospitals, clinics, and healthcare employers nationwide.

The online portion uses True Adaptive™ learning powered by Area9 Lyceum, which continuously assesses your knowledge and confidence level, then adjusts the content path accordingly. Spend more time on gaps, less time on content you already know. The result is a personalized, competency-focused experience.

BLS, ACLS, and PALS: Which Course Do You Need?

Safety Training Seminars offers three Self-Guided Learning courses for healthcare professionals, all following the latest American Heart Association guidelines:

BLS (Basic Life Support)

The HeartCode® Complete BLS course covers high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants, AED use, airway management, and team-based resuscitation. It is required for nurses, physicians, EMTs, dental professionals, medical assistants, and most clinical staff. The online portion takes one to two hours; the skills session runs approximately 30 minutes.

ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)

The HeartCode® Complete ACLS course builds on BLS skills to cover cardiac arrest management, ECG rhythm recognition, pharmacology, airway intervention, and post-resuscitation care. It is required for emergency department staff, ICU nurses, paramedics, and providers who manage cardiac emergencies. The online component takes two to three hours; the skills session takes approximately 30 minutes.

PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)

The HeartCode® Complete PALS course focuses on respiratory emergencies, shock, and cardiac arrest in infants and children. It is required for pediatric nurses, NICU staff, pediatric emergency providers, and transport teams. Like ACLS, the online portion takes two to three hours and the skills session runs about 30 minutes.

All three courses use the HeartCode® Complete format. Upon successful completion, learners receive an American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, or PALS Provider eCard—issued the same day.

HeartCode® is a trademark of the American Heart Association.

Why Self-Guided Learning Works for Vallejo Healthcare Professionals

Vallejo’s healthcare workforce serves a broad and busy community. Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center, Sutter Solano Medical Center, and Touro University California all draw professionals who need to meet employer certification requirements on tight schedules. Rotating shifts, limited time off, and long commutes through Solano County make full-day classroom courses difficult to fit in.

Self-Guided Learning solves that scheduling problem. A nurse finishing a night shift at Kaiser can complete the online modules at home before sleeping, then stop in at the Vallejo training center during a midweek afternoon to complete the skills session. A paramedic based near Mare Island or commuting from Benicia or American Canyon can book the skills check around their rotation without taking an entire day off.

The training center at 1006 Marin Street is accessible from Interstate 780 and Highway 37, making it convenient for providers traveling from Benicia, Napa, Fairfield, Suisun City, and American Canyon. Daily scheduling, including evening and weekend time slots, means there is always an available appointment.
